Principal's Message

Concordia High School is one of Western Canada's best choices in independent schooling. Since 1921 the school has focused on preparing youth to best use their abilities as they prepare for university programs and ultimately, the various vocations and professions.

Preparing for University is no small challenge for today's student. Concordia, with its small classes and dedicated staff of teachers offers university-bound students that extra edge. Our teachers will challenge students to develop the academic skills and independent work habits that are necessary for success in post secondary programs.

The Concordia advantage goes far beyond the academic. All of our activities are conducted within the context of the Christian faith which daily reminds us of God's love for us in Jesus Christ. Our students are encouraged to value learning, to respect others, and to develop ways of using their God-given abilities to serve their campus, their community, and their world.

Concordia High School is an international campus. While the majority of our students are day students, a significant number of them come to us from locations around the globe, giving all Concordia students the opportunity to build their understanding of the international scene and to begin forming relationships that will position them for success in a global society.

I invite you to discover Concordia for yourself. Please contact us to arrange for a visit to our campus or to get the specific information you require.

History

Founded in 1921 by the Lutheran Church-Canada Missosuri Synod, Concordia began as a preparatory school for young men interested in church ministry careers. Over the past eight decades, Concordia has developed into a co-educational degree-granting institution known as Concordia University College of Alberta and an academic high school known as Concordia High School.

Since the early 1980's, Concordia University has experienced rapid growth and a building expansion program was needed to accommodate the ever increasing needs of the degree-granting university. The resulting institutional plans have seen Concordia High School become a unique autonomous institution located on the same campus as the University.

In 1997, Concordia High School moved into a new building on the north end of the campus. This building houses classroom and office facilities for the high school and athletic facilities that are shared by all programs on the campus. The 2001-02 school year marked a new milestone as Concordia High School began to operate under its own Board of Governors

Residential Life

Residence living is both challenging and rewarding. It sometimes creates tension, challenging us to exercise patience, consideration, love and forgiveness in our relationships with one another, but also offers opportunities for personal growth, maturation and the development of deep and lasting friendships.

Student Council

The student council operates under the mission statement

USING OUR GOD-GIVEN GIFTS TO SERVE EACH OTHER AND OUR COMMUNITY

Each year, the council elects students to the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Spiritual Life Coordinator, Sports Coordinator, Publicity Coordinator, and six Grade Representatives. Elections for most positions are held in April, for the subsequent school year. Elections for Grade Reps are held in September.

Leadership training is an important part of the student council experience. A highlight of the council year is the Fall Retreat, held at the end of September. The entire student council goes to Camp Kuriakos in Sylvan Lake for a two-day retreat. This allows student council uninterrupted time to work on planning the year.

Annual events include Shake and Bake, Fall Celebration, Turkey Trot, Soccer Shoot-out, Trick or Treat, Video Dance, Profound Prognostications, Secret Santas, Christmas Dinner, Barbecues, Matchmaker, Steal-my-heart, Bonkers for Basketball, Tag that Tune, Pancake Tuesday and Easter Egg Hunt.

Thinking of getting involved in Student Council? Meetings are held every other Wednesday at noon. If you are committed to the school, enjoy getting involved in planning and leading activities, and are willing to learn the skills necessary to be a leader, consider running for a position on Student Council.

Performing Arts

Concordia High School plans one major performance each year.

Performances have varied from musicals such as "Opal" or "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" to an evening of dinner theatre featuring a number of one-act plays. Students are encouraged to enroll in drama classes, but all students are welcome to audition for roles in a production.

Concordia's choir program includes an introductory choir available to all singers and an "honor choir," open by audition only. Choral music credits are available to students in either choir. The choirs perform annually in concert with the Concordia University College of Alberta Concert Choir and accept a limited number of engagements at local churches, seniors' residences and shopping malls. The honor choir tours at least once each year. Students are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances.

Spiritual Life

Faith Focused Learning.

Concordia's mission statement places the Christian faith at the focal point of all its activities. This faith is lived out in the daily interactions between staff and students and is also formally incorporated into the programs of the school.
